13 Tips for a Good Night's Sleep

Hello again!

In the last issue, one of the featured articles highlighted how poor sleep habits throughout the week can harm heart health. So, in this issue, I’ve brought you an article on 13 habits for a good night’s sleep!

You’ll find more heart-health news below, including an oldie but goodie from the Speak for the Heart blog archive, in honor of National Dog Day this Saturday, August 26!

Results of last week’s poll are below, and there’s a new health-related poll below as usual too, but I have an extra poll this week that I want to put up front here, because I’m trying to figure out how best to focus my social media efforts and posts. Would you help me out by answering this quick question? Many thanks in advance!

Weekly Heart-Health News: The Highlights

My Take:

This is a great article from the AARP that applies to everyone of all ages. It hits upon all the major areas of good sleep hygiene. And, as illustrated in last week’s newsletter, getting good sleep is part of keeping your heart healthy. Plus, it will just make you feel better on a daily basis—and who doesn’t want that? 😉

My Take:

I pulled this one out of the Speak for the Heart blog’s archives, in honor of National Dog Day, which is this Saturday, August 26! Dogs are amazing in so many ways, and one of those ways is how they help keep our hearts healthy!

As you’ll see from this article, for people who had already had a heart attack or other coronary event (such as having a stent placed), living in a home with a dog was associated with a 65% reduction in risk of death from any cause. That is greater than the effect of any single medication given to cardiovascular disease survivors.

Last Week’s Poll Results:

“How many hours of sleep do you get most nights?

1/3 of respondents answered, “6 to 7 hours.”

The rest were split evenly among every other answer except 7 to 8 hours, which no one reported getting. That is interesting, given that that is the usual minimally recommended amount of sleep. It fits with our epidemic of chronic sleep deprivation, though! I do hope that the tips above will prove helpful. Taking care of yourself means prioritizing your sleep. You are worth it!
