Health Coaching Now Available!
And more weekly heart-health news
Hello again!
My biggest news for you this week is that I have now opened a limited number of health-coaching spots:
Please visit the site for all the details—individual and group sessions, as well as monthly packages, are now available! Space is very limited, and new clients are being accepted by application only. (It’s a simple, 2- to 3-minute application, but very important to the process.)
And, for the month of October only, Premium subscribers to this newsletter will receive 5% off any of my health coaching services (upon successful application).
If you’re not already a Premium subscriber, you can still upgrade and get the discount, as long as you do so before the end of October!
(For new subscribers): This weekly update goes out every Wednesday, except for the final Wednesday of the month, when the long magazine-style version of Speak for the Heart will be delivered to your inbox. As always, premium subscribers get bonus content in every issue!
To your health,
Yasmine S. Ali, MD
Weekly Heart-Health News: The Highlights
My Take:
More and more, we are learning that any amount of movement and physical activity is better than none—another reason to stay in motion throughout your day. It doesn’t have to be for long; short bursts of activity can improve your health and prevent chronic disease (like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity) too. It doesn’t have to be regimented, either. You don’t have to spend an hour every day at the gym. Just keep moving in your everyday life, in any way you can. Here are 6 ideas:
Take the stairs.
Park farther away and walk a bit more to your destination (when safe to do so).
Do some household chores! 😉
Get up from your desk—right now!—and walk around or stretch for a minute.
Go for a 10-minute walk at lunch or after dinner (take your dog, if you have one!).
Make your next meeting a walking meeting.
My Take:
To be honest, I have been waiting for findings like this to come out. In spite of the hype and popularity of stevia as a “natural” sugar alternative, I have always resisted recommending stevia as a way to sweeten food or beverages. This is because history has shown us, again and again (think: aspartame [Nutrasweet, Equal], saccharin [Sweet ‘n’ Low], sucralose [Splenda] ), that artificial sweeteners have damaging side effects, often ranging from cardiovascular disease to cancer.
This is also why I keep advocating that natural, whole foods are best. Not artificial, manufactured ingredients. So, while we should all limit our sugar intake, trying to satisfy a sweet tooth with an artificial sweetener is not the way to go. Look to natural sources instead—raw cane sugar or honey, for example—and limit the amount you use. Better yet, have a delicious whole fruit and enjoy the natural, nutritious sweetness that also comes with many health benefits!
