Heart-Health News: The Highlights

My Take:

You’ll often hear me say, “What’s good for the heart is good for the brain.” And indeed, when it comes to preventing dementia, this couldn’t be more true.

Some of the best ways to prevent dementia have nothing to do with working puzzles or playing memory games. They have everything to do with living a healthy lifestyle—putting into practice the tips and insights I provide in this newsletter issue after issue.

The article above is one more striking example of this. Researchers found that risk for dementia dropped by 20% in people who replaced a small daily serving (about 1 oz.) of processed red meat (e.g., cured sausage, hot dogs, pepperoni, cured deli meats) with a daily serving of nuts and legumes (beans, peas, lentils) instead.

Do you eat processed red meat? There are many reasons to eliminate it from your diet, including higher risk of cancer in addition to this new finding of higher dementia risk. Take action today to replace that red meat with healthier, plant-based protein.

My Take:

There have been several studies showing that a daily, 30-minute walk significantly reduces the risk of dementia. Now, there are studies showing that another type of physical activity can also reduce your dementia risk. See article above for details.

Oh, and it should come as no surprise by now that physical activity of any kind is good for both your heart and your brain! 😉

My Take:

You might not have realized this, but if you want to maximize your chances of preventing dementia, you should get your hearing checked if you have any signs of hearing loss (even mild), and take measures to protect your hearing at every stage of life.

Check out the article above to see how hearing loss is associated with increased risk of dementia.
