Do You Know How to Winterize Your Heart?

Simple strategies to protect your heart from extreme cold

Hello again and happy new year!

Given that extreme cold weather has gripped most of the nation this week, I thought it would be timely to include some articles on how to protect your heart from the extreme cold.

Here in Middle Tennessee, we got at least a foot of snow around my house in the past couple of days—it’s highly unusual for us to ever get so much snow in an entire winter, much less in a single snowfall. This has been accompanied by bitterly cold temperatures, well below freezing, with wind chills that are even worse. So I’m feeling the need for some heart-healthy TLC, too!

How about you? Are you experiencing extreme cold weather, and if so, how are you dealing with it? I’d love to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to write me. Just reply to this message.

(If you’re one of my readers from “Down Under,” you might be experiencing extreme heat, in which case, this one’s for you: https://newsroom.heart.org/news/5-ways-to-keep-your-heart-safe-in-extreme-heat )

Weekly Heart-Health News: The Highlights

My Take:

This is an article I wrote for the Speak for the Heart blog on my own website last week. In it, you’ll find out why extreme cold is so hard on the heart, and what you can do to protect yours.

My Take:

As with all times of year, it’s still important to get at least 5 to 7 servings of fruits and vegetables daily during the winter. This will boost your immunity against colds and other viruses like the flu and COVID-19, and will help keep your heart and the rest of your body healthy as well.

Although it may seem difficult to find fresh fruits and vegetables in the winter, there are actually ones that are in season (and thus freshest) now. This article highlights 5 of those.
