The Power of Play
For your heart, mind, and soul
Hello again!
I hope you’ve had a good week so far and are looking forward to a relaxing Labor Day holiday.
Speaking of relaxing, in this issue, we’ll focus on a topic that is crucial to our health but that is increasingly overlooked and sidelined in today’s fast-paced, work-obsessed culture: the power and importance of play.
Play is crucial to human development—mental and physical—at all ages. It decreases stress, strengthens relationships, improves heart and brain health, and may even prevent dementia. (If you missed the previous issue on preventing dementia, you can read it here.)
So, see below for some great ways to incorporate more play into your life!
To your health,
Yasmine S. Ali, MD

Heart-Health News: The Highlights
My Take:
National Dog Day was this past Monday, and playing with my dogs reminded me to share with you this interview I did with professional dog trainer Marc Goldberg, on the power and importance of playing with your dog, how to do so purposefully, and how to strengthen the bond with your dog while doing so.
You’ll also find, in this interview, why I recommend Goldberg’s latest book, The Joy of Playing with Your Dog, so highly!

As I’ve written before, dogs do more than most of us realize to improve our health—especially our heart health:
Playing with our dogs is one key way by which we can share our health benefits with them. So, make time to play with your dog every day, starting today! And if you need some great ideas for tricks and games to play with your dog, check out Goldberg’s book—it really will help you strengthen your relationship with your dog, and get more, fun mental and physical activity for both of you!
My Take:
As I mentioned above, play is important for many reasons, including improving your brain health and decreasing your dementia risk!
Check out the article above to discover which games in particular have been associated with lowering the risk of dementia. Do you do any of these already? If not, which could you begin doing this very weekend?
